Follow these top tips to keep your family safe at home:

  • Regularly test your smoke alarm;
  • Always blow out candles when you go to bed or leave the house;
  • Don’t smoke in bed;
  • Don’t wedge open fire doors in your home or in the block;
  • Keep stairwells, walkways and communal areas clear of clutter and rubbish;
  • Don’t overload electrical items;
  • Don’t leave electrical items on standby overnight;
  • Don’t dry laundry on heaters;
  • Make sure everyone in your family know the escape route in case of an emergency.

If you smell gas open the doors and windows, switch off the gas supply at the meter and phone TRANSCO on 0800 111 999. If you don’t know where your gas meter or gas supply tap is ask us.

If you have a flood at home turn off the mains water supply at the stopcock (usually found in the bathroom or kitchen). If you aren’t sure where the stopcock is in your home ask us.

If you have an emergency repair at home like a burst pipe during office hours (9am to 5pm) call the TMO office on 0203 643 6941. During ‘out of hours’ you will need to call Southwark Council on 0800 952 4444 or 020 7525 2600.
